It's been a while but the "Beasts of the Southern Wild" director Ben Zeitlin is back with a new movie. "Wendy" is the re-imagining of the classic Peter Pan story through another character's eyes.

Lost on a mysterious island where aging and time have come unglued, Wendy must fight to save her family, her freedom and the joyous spirit of youth from the deadly peril of growing up.

The entirely new adaptation of Peter Pan shines a fresh light on the character of Wendy. It’s a story director and screenwriter Benh Zeitlin always wanted to bring to life.

"I was really interested in her story. The one who experiences "Neverland" but then has to leave and how do you conquer that, and how do you let go of that, and how do you stay true to the adventure of "Neverland" without actually just staying a child your whole life. Wendy in every version of the story, she's sort of a mother to the lost boys. In every version of Peter Pan, motherhood means you stay at home while the boys go out and have an adventure. We wanted to make the film where Wendy was unshackled from that," said Zeitlin.

The film has a stunning cast of first-time young actors, headlined by Devin France as Wendy.

"We wanted to make a film with kids who really would run away with Peter. And so, when we were casting the film we knew those weren't going to be trained actors, they won't be kids who had sort of ambition of making it in Hollywood or any sort of experience. We were looking for kids who had this wild look in their eye, wild imagination," added Zeitlin.

For Zeitlin’s follow-up to the critically acclaimed and Oscar nominated 2012 film “Beasts of the Southern Wild”, he wanted to dig into a mythology that had captivated him as child.

"I grew up in Queens and I remember we had an alleyway in our street and it was sort of our Neverland. And, I remember all the kids from the alley congregating and sort of building worlds. Really we wanted to take the framework of the story, some of the characters and take these themes of aging and let people enter the mythology that they know but then take them into an adventure that they could never expect. I say let go of your expectations. It's not like a story that you know," said Zeitlin.
