Andrew Gillum, former Democratic gubernatorial nominee and Tallahassee Mayor, was one of three men present in an incident at a Miami Beach hotel room, where police discovered what it suspected to be crystal meth.
The event happened early Friday morning at the Mondrian South Beach Hotel located at 1100 West Avenue in Miami Beach.
Gillum was not arrested or cited for the incident. Officers made contact with him and another man inside of a hotel room, who were both under the influence of unknown substances.
Fire Rescue responded and found Gillium and a man who was suffering from a possible drug overdose in the room. The man was transported for treatment.
On Friday, Gillum released a statement addressing the situation in which he said he was in Miami for a wedding celebration when first responders were called to assist one of his friends.
"While I had too much to drink, I want to be clear that I have never used methamphetamine. I apologize to the people of Florida for the distraction this has caused our movement," the statement read.
Inside the hotel room, officers observed in plain sight three small, clear plastic baggies containing suspected crystal meth on the bed and the floor. These were taken as evidence.
According to a case report obtained by ABC Action News in Tampa, Gillum was seen vomiting in the bathroom while the other man reportedly had trouble breathing and later collapsed.
Officers tried to speak with Gillum, but he was unable to respond due to his inebriated state, police say.
Police said Gillum left the hotel and returned to his home without incident.
